Motorists in Solihull have been given a reprieve after a planned full weekend closure of the M42 was postponed because of strong winds.

The closure had been scheduled to begin at 9pm on Friday, October 23, and continue until 5am on Monday, October 26.

It was due to affect the M42 northbound between junctions 6 and 9 and southbound between junctions 9 and 7, disrupting journeys across Solihull and the wider West Midlands.

The works form part of the HS2 construction programme, which involves installing sections of the Water Orton viaducts and continuing construction of the M6 South Viaduct.

The postponement means drivers will not face the planned weekend shutdown on the original dates, according to the update supplied.

When will the M42 closure take place?

HS2 has previously identified November 6 to 9 as contingency dates for the work if the October closure cannot go ahead.

However, it has not been possible to independently confirm whether those dates will now be used following the reported postponement.

The planned closure also included restrictions affecting the M6 junction 4a southbound link to the M42 in both directions, as well as sections of the M6 Toll.

What should drivers do?

Motorists travelling through Solihull, particularly those heading to Birmingham Airport or the National Exhibition Centre, should check for updated travel information before setting off.

The original closure was intended to allow engineers to carry out major construction work safely over the motorway network.

Further information is available through HS2's motorway works updates and National Highways.
