Diesel prices break £2 in Solihull as cheapest places to fill up revealed

Diesel prices have passed the £2-a-litre mark in Solihull, with the latest local figures showing motorists are paying more than the national average.

The average price of diesel across the Solihull forecourts recorded in the latest data is 201.1p per litre, compared with a UK average of 199.7p.

The figures come as diesel prices across the UK reach record levels.

The RAC said the national average hit 199.18p per litre on 28 September, surpassing the previous record of 199.09p set in June 2022. The cost of filling an average family diesel car has now risen to almost £110.

For Solihull drivers, however, where they choose to fill up can make a noticeable difference.

The cheapest reported standard diesel price in the borough on 29 September is 197.9p per litre at Solihull Esso Express on Warwick Road.

That compares with 209.9p per litre at A.C.O Motors in Earlswood, a difference of 12p per litre.

For a 50-litre tank, that works out at a difference of £6 for a single fill-up.

The prices were reported on 29 September, although fuel prices can change throughout the day.

The figures mean drivers in Shirley and surrounding areas have several options below the £2 mark, although some of the cheapest prices are only marginally below it.

A driver filling a 50-litre tank at 197.9p per litre would pay around £98.95.

At 209.9p, the same fill would cost £104.95.

For motorists filling up regularly, that difference can quickly add up.

The increase in diesel prices is being driven by wider pressures on global fuel supplies.

The RAC said the latest national record represents a 56.8p per litre increase since 28 February, when diesel averaged 142.38p at the start of the US-Iran conflict.

The organisation has warned that the rising cost is not only affecting drivers, but could also feed through into the wider economy because diesel is heavily used by vans, lorries and other vehicles involved in transporting goods and services.

With Solihull's average already above £2 a litre, local motorists are likely to be paying close attention to forecourt prices as the latest increase continues to work its way through the market.
